Buenos Aires Expands Cryptocurrency Payment Options

In a significant move towards embracing digital currencies, the government of Buenos Aires has announced that residents can now pay taxes and administrative fees using Dogecoin (DOGE). This addition to the city's cryptocurrency payment options aims to simplify transactions and promote financial inclusion.

Details of the Initiative

The initiative, part of the city's broader digital economy strategy, allows residents and businesses to settle various municipal obligations, including:

• Property Tax (ABL)

• Vehicle Registration Fees (Patentes)

• Turnover Tax (Ingresos Brutos)

• Driver’s Licenses

• Traffic Fines

Payments are facilitated through a secure QR code system, enabling users to transact using compatible cryptocurrency wallets. The DOGE payments are converted into Argentine Pesos by authorized providers before being credited to the city's accounts, ensuring compliance with local financial regulations.

Regulatory Support for Crypto Activities

To support the adoption of cryptocurrencies, Buenos Aires has implemented several regulatory measures:

• Economic Activity Classification: Crypto-related activities have been added to the city's economic activity nomenclature, simplifying tax filings for businesses in the sector.

• Tax Base Adjustment: The taxable base for cryptocurrency trading has been adjusted to reflect net income, rather than gross transaction value, making the tax regime more equitable for crypto traders.

• Exemption for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs): VASPs are excluded from certain banking collection regimes, reducing administrative burdens and fostering a more favorable environment for crypto businesses.

Aiming for Global Leadership in Crypto Adoption

Mayor Jorge Macri emphasized that the goal is for Buenos Aires to become a global leader in cryptocurrency adoption. He noted that the city already possesses the necessary human capital and is now focusing on building the infrastructure to support and attract crypto-related enterprises.

With over 10 million cryptocurrency accounts nationwide, Argentina is positioning itself as a hub for digital innovation in Latin America. The inclusion of Dogecoin in the city's payment options underscores Buenos Aires' commitment to embracing the digital economy and providing residents with diverse, modern payment solutions.
