New Research Shows Bitcoin Lightning Payments Could Work Between Mars and Earth in Just 3 Minutes

Could Bitcoin work on Mars?

A groundbreaking new study says yes — and it may only take three minutes.

Researchers have found that Bitcoin Lightning Network payments could be transmitted between Mars and Earth with an average delay of about 180 seconds, despite the vast distance of roughly 225 million kilometers at their farthest points.

The research highlights Lightning’s ability to process off-chain transactions efficiently, with only minimal latency caused by the speed of light limitation in space.

“Our simulation shows that Bitcoin’s Lightning Network can operate even across interplanetary distances, making near real-time payments between Earth and Mars possible,” the researchers wrote.

This finding has sparked excitement about the potential for interplanetary finance in the future, as humanity prepares for possible Mars colonization missions.

The study also noted that while Lightning payments are feasible, on-chain Bitcoin transactions would face much longer confirmation times due to network latency and block production intervals.

For now, the experiment is theoretical — but it shows that Bitcoin’s scalability solutions are already robust enough to handle even space-age use cases.
